Heart disease remains Australia's leading cause of death. Diet is one of the most powerful modifiable risk factors. Here's what research says about Makhana and cardiovascular health.

The Low Sodium Advantage

Plain Makhana contains roughly 8mg of natural sodium per 30g serving โ€” compared to ~160โ€“200mg in the same weight of typical chips. High sodium intake is directly linked to elevated blood pressure, the biggest risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

Magnesium and Cardiovascular Function

Makhana provides approximately 28mg of magnesium per 30g (around 7% of the RDI). Magnesium supports normal heart rhythm, helps regulate blood pressure, and is involved in energy production in cardiac muscle cells. Australian surveys show 30โ€“40% of adults don't meet the recommended daily intake.

โš ๏ธ Note: Flavoured Makhana varieties contain added salt. Check the nutrition panel if sodium management is a health priority.

Kaempferol: The Antioxidant Story

Makhana contains kaempferol โ€” a flavonoid that has shown anti-inflammatory properties and inhibits LDL cholesterol oxidation in laboratory studies. While more human trials are needed, preliminary findings are encouraging.
